Reform councillor Christine Duffy attempts to resign from her role, citing a lack of training, but sends her resignation letter to the wrong council. The letter is initially delivered to Kidsgrove Town Council instead of Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council.
Duffy, elected to Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council in May, submits the resignation notice on 4 August. Media reports, citing BBC News, say the letter states she is stepping down because she received “very little or no training” for the role. The notice is passed to the correct authority, but by the time it reaches the proper officer, Duffy has decided to withdraw it.
In a separate development, Duffy later posts on the Reform UK Newcastle-under-Lyme Facebook page, saying she is “appalled” the letter was obtained and is being used for party political purposes by others. Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council’s chief executive, Gordon Mole, says resignation would follow the Local Government Act 1972 process and that the withdrawn notice means she continues serving as a borough councillor.
