Vice President Kashim Shettima resumes official duties in Nigeria two days ahead of his scheduled return after completing a two-week leave. Multiple outlets report that he comes back early and starts working in Abuja, with aides indicating the earlier resumption is tied to the government’s immediate priorities.

Both reports link his early return to the start of campaigns for Nigeria’s 2027 elections. Nigeria’s electoral commission is reported to have set the campaign start for August 19, and Shettima’s return on August 18 places him ahead of that timeline. One outlet also notes that he is absent from the Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the State House the day after his return.

The earlier leave is described as his first official leave since taking office in May 2023, taken with Tinubu’s approval. His aide frames the break as time for reflection and reviewing government programmes, before Shettima re-engages with ongoing initiatives as the administration pushes forward its agenda and election preparations intensify.
