A bike rally organised by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) in Shillong turns violent, with reports of vehicles being torched or vandalised and damage to statues in several areas. Multiple outlets describe unrest that includes smashed vehicle windows, attacks on police or escort vehicles, and arson incidents as the rally moves through the city.
The KSU had called the protest as part of an ongoing agitation over a five-point charter of demands that includes recruitment and issues related to indigenous protection, migration and environmental concerns. Times of India adds that the agitation also opposes a proposed public hearing linked to a limestone mining project and that the rally followed an ultimatum and a planned black-flag demonstration. NDTV and Free Press Journal cite police sources and say incidents are reported from locations such as Polo, Barik and Mawlai, including alleged damage to a National Informatics Centre vehicle.
Free Press Journal additionally reports claims from a family that their vehicle was attacked while passengers were inside, supported by viral video footage. Reports also mention damaged statues, including a Vivekananda statue enclosure and a Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose statue. Authorities permitted the rally but imposed conditions and increased security, and police investigate the incidents and those involved.
