Hypersonic missile startup Castelion is raising $1 billion, according to reports from SpaceNews and Quartz. The funding is intended to support expanded production of the company’s existing hypersonic missile and to accelerate additional weapons development.

SpaceNews says the company was founded by former SpaceX executives and is working to produce a lower-cost hypersonic weapon, while also building a broader portfolio that includes longer-range strike and missile defense capabilities. Quartz adds that the financing round is valued at $13 billion and specifically points to funding for expanded production of Castelion’s “Blackbeard” hypersonic missile, along with development of longer-range strike and defensive systems.

While both outlets agree on the size of the raise and its focus on Blackbeard and future weapon programs, Quartz emphasizes the valuation figure. SpaceNews places more weight on the company’s background and stated aim of reducing hypersonic weapon costs.
