The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) bars Copthall Mauritius Investment and Mansi Share & Stock Broking from accessing the securities market for allegedly manipulating the Sensex during the newly introduced Closing Auction Session (CAS) at BSE. SEBI says it detected sharp and unusual movements in the index on August 13, the Sensex expiry day, and that the alleged conduct was intended to benefit from outstanding Sensex options positions.

SEBI also impounds alleged wrongful gains totaling about Rs 3.6–3.67 crore. Reports specify Rs 2.96 crore linked to Copthall Mauritius Investment and Rs 71.64 lakh associated with Mansi Share & Stock Broking. The regulator orders that their participation in the equity segment’s CAS is prohibited, including restrictions on placing, modifying or cancelling orders, and it freezes bank accounts against debits without prior permission.

Context includes SEBI’s broader focus on market integrity following CAS implementation on August 3. CAS runs for 20 minutes between 3:15 pm and 3:35 pm and determines closing prices through an auction process. SEBI’s Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey had recently warned that SEBI would take strict action against CAS manipulation, citing improved detectability compared with the earlier VWAP method and emphasizing potential consequences for market participants.
