Nyesom Wike, Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, criticises presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, describing him as a “voodoo economist” and saying he is not a leading contender for the 2027 election. Wike’s comments are tied to Atiku’s recent remarks about restoring petrol subsidy if elected president.

Atiku had stated that he would reinstate the petrol subsidy in 2027, arguing that the government has not accounted for funds saved after President Bola Tinubu removed the subsidy in 2023. In response, Wike says Atiku is shifting positions and questions why the former vice-president is reversing earlier statements.

Across the reports, Wike also downplays Atiku’s electoral prospects, asserting that Tinubu remains the only leading candidate. He adds that the 2027 election will be easier for the ruling party than 2023, citing weaker opposition and arguing that parties and candidates presented for the election do not amount to serious challenge.
