Mumbai’s taxi and autorickshaw fares increase from September 1 after the state government approves a fare revision by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA). The minimum taxi fare rises by ₹2 (from ₹31 to ₹33), and the minimum autorickshaw fare increases by ₹1 (from ₹26 to ₹27). The change follows a previous revision that took effect on February 1, 2025, and is implemented using the Khatua Committee formula for per-kilometre rates.
According to the Khatua Committee-based calculations cited in one report, the taxi per-kilometre fare increases from ₹20.66 to ₹21.90, while the auto per-kilometre fare goes up from ₹17.14 to ₹18.22. One fare revision rounds off the first 1.5 km of the auto fare to ₹27. The adjustment factors include fuel prices, vehicle costs, the Consumer Price Index, vehicle loan interest rates, and taxes. Unions welcome the decision, while some commuters express concern about added monthly travel costs, even if the minimum changes are small.
Times of India also reports the same timing and broad magnitude of the minimum fare increases across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), while describing the hike as a ₹1 rise for autos and a ₹2 rise for taxis.
