African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore says it is not too late to arrest and prosecute former military head of state Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida over alleged crimes committed during what he calls his military dictatorship. Sowore makes the claim in a post on his verified X account on Thursday.

Sowore links his call to the fact that Babangida marks his 85th birthday. He argues that age should not provide immunity from accountability, pointing to the example of Augusto Pinochet, whom he says faced arrest and extended legal proceedings even in his 80s. He also says the alleged unresolved killings, abuses, corruption, and other grave violations connected to Babangida’s period in power warrant investigation and, if evidence supports it, prosecution.

Both outlets present the same core points: Sowore’s demand for legal action, the reference to Babangida’s age, and the list of alleged harms tied to Babangida’s rule.
