Mountaineer and doctor Asma Mushtaq, 34, dies during her descent from Spantik (7,027 metres) in Pakistan’s Karakoram range. According to the Alpine Club of Pakistan, she reaches the summit in good health but later develops a serious high-altitude medical emergency at about 6,400 metres and cannot be saved despite immediate assistance.

Her mountain guide, Akbar Ali, and expedition guide, Muhammad Amin, provide help during the incident under difficult high-altitude conditions. The outlets describe the emergency as consistent with life-threatening altitude illness, including severe pulmonary and cerebral conditions caused by reduced oxygen levels at extreme elevations. Reports say the descent makes response and rescue particularly challenging once symptoms start.

All accounts identify Mushtaq as a UK-based obstetrics and gynaecology doctor from Lahore and a mountaineer who documents climbs online. She is described as part of a five-member Pakistani women’s team that includes Zoni Aslam, Zaba Shigri, Shama and Sohana. The Alpine Club of Pakistan and the expedition company say they are coordinating with relevant authorities and with Mushtaq’s family for the next steps, including arrangements related to recovering her body.
