Canada-based Fairfax Financial is reportedly nearing a decision on the Indian government’s IDBI Bank stake sale, with sources saying it could be given up to two years to consolidate its banking interests.
The potential issue is Fairfax’s existing ownership in CSB Bank, where it holds about 40%. Regulators do not allow an entity to independently operate two separate banks, so Fairfax may need to either sell its CSB Bank stake or restructure through a merger involving CSB Bank and IDBI Bank. Some sources say a sale could be simpler than a merger, including on labour-related complications, though a government official cited in one report warns that any two-year consolidation timeline remains speculative.
Separate coverage also places the IDBI transaction in later stages of the process after the government receives revised bids from Fairfax and Emirates following a cut in the reserve price. The proposals have cleared a committee of senior bureaucrats and are awaiting review by a ministerial panel. Any outcome still depends on regulatory approvals from the RBI and SEBI.
