Publisher and former presidential aspirant Dele Momodu says he would make an extraordinary personal sacrifice to support President Bola Tinubu if Tinubu practices the democratic principles they fought for. Speaking on Arise TV, Momodu uses the example of swimming the Atlantic Ocean, while adding that he would be a “hypocrite” to oppose military dictatorship only to end up with what he describes as civilian dictatorship.

Momodu frames his stance as driven by principles rather than personal dislike, saying Tinubu is not an enemy to him. He recalls that Tinubu helped train him to challenge authority and instilled discipline during Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle in the 1990s. The outlets also note their shared history, including opposition to military rule and involvement connected to the June 12 mandate of Chief Moshood Abiola, as well as exile during General Sani Abacha’s crackdown and return after Abacha’s death in 1998.

Both sources report that Momodu has become a vocal critic of Tinubu’s administration even as he credits Tinubu’s earlier political achievements, particularly in Lagos. They portray his warning about authoritarian tendencies as part of his wider engagement in opposition politics ahead of the 2027 elections.
