India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) sign a $230 million loan agreement to modernise and expand Chennai’s water supply and sanitation infrastructure. The deal supports the Chennai Climate-Resilient Water Security and Sewerage Project, aiming to improve access to safe, reliable water and better sanitation services across the city.

According to a Ministry of Finance statement cited by outlets, the project includes building more than 170 km of water and sewer pipelines, upgrading multiple water and sewer pumping stations, and strengthening water utility assets and operations through performance-based contracts. Outlets also highlight the introduction of a “ring-main” solution—a closed-loop plumbing system intended to balance water pressure and improve reliability.

Reporting across sources is aligned on the loan amount and the modernisation focus. The Free Press Journal adds more operational and technical details, including real-time monitoring and digital transformation, faster blockage detection, and reduced reliance on hazardous manual sewer inspections. NDTV presents the initiative more broadly, noting it builds on ADB’s earlier support for Chennai’s water and sanitation network.
