The Daily Mail is accused of secretly tailing, photographing, and publishing an article that falsely identifies a woman as former White Stripes drummer Meg White. According to multiple sources reported by The Guardian, the newspaper’s investigation includes surveillance in Detroit, followed by publication of photos and claims about a “secret new life.” The allegation extends to the paper continuing the identification even after the woman tells the outlet it has the wrong person.

The Guardian reports that the tabloid removes the content: an article and photographs first published on 6 August are taken down from its website, but the paper does not provide a correction or explanation for the removal. NME reports that White’s friend Karen Elson describes the actions as “reckless and cruel.” Across outlets, the central dispute focuses on the Daily Mail’s methods, the accuracy of its identification, and the lack of public clarification after the material is deleted.
