The U.S. Justice Department announces it is creating a fund of about $1.7 billion (reported as roughly $1.8 billion or $1.776 billion by different outlets) to compensate individuals who say they were unfairly investigated, prosecuted, or targeted by the Justice Department under the prior Biden administration. The announcement is made as part of a settlement connected to President Donald Trump dropping a lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service.
According to multiple reports, Trump previously filed a lawsuit seeking $10 billion related to an alleged leak of his 2019 tax returns, with claims that the IRS failed to protect him and the Trump Organization. In the settlement, the DOJ says it will create the compensation fund and, in addition, Trump does not receive payments from it, but he receives a formal apology, according to the DOJ.
All sources describe the fund as intended to provide restitution to people who believe they were treated improperly during investigations or prosecutions that they attribute to the previous administration.
