Political strategist Umar Ardo says a coalition between presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi is unlikely ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 election. Speaking on Arise News, Ardo argues that coalition-building faces two main challenges tied to whether each candidate would step down and how their supporters would react.
Ardo says Atiku is unlikely to withdraw from the race, arguing he does not have the “propensity” to step aside. He adds that, if Atiku did announce a withdrawal, he would probably keep support from his base. In contrast, Ardo contends Peter Obi could be more willing to step down, but that doing so would likely alienate his supporters, making it difficult for any merger to hold.
Across both outlets, the overall framing is that a potential fusion of the two camps is constrained by the political risk to supporter loyalty. Both also note Ardo’s view that even without a coalition, either candidate could still challenge the incumbent, depending on strategy.
