Indonesia is sending an additional 1,500 soldiers to help fight wildfires on Borneo, an official says. The fires have scorched large areas of the island and have produced thick smog affecting some regions. The deployment is part of an ongoing response to blazes burning during the year.
Government figures cited by outlets say fires between January and July have burned more than 200,000 hectares of land. That area is described as several times larger than Jakarta. The government attributes much of the ongoing fire risk to dry conditions linked to a strong El Niño weather pattern. One outlet adds that President Prabowo Subianto visits Borneo as the expanded troop deployment is announced.
While both reports focus on the scale of the fires and the troop increase, coverage differs mainly in emphasis: one highlights the presidential visit, while the other focuses more directly on the government’s overall wildfire statistics and the rationale for the enhanced response.
