Multiple reports citing Weibo leaker Instant Digital say Apple is still testing materials that could replace or improve on the aluminum frame used in the iPhone 17 Pro models. According to the claims, Apple’s recent shift from titanium to aluminum was viewed as a stopgap, while development continues on two potential alternatives: liquid metal and an improved titanium alloy with better thermal performance. The reports note that Apple introduced titanium with the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, and continued it with the iPhone 16 Pro models, after which aluminum was adopted for iPhone 17 Pro. The leaker attributes thermal concerns to titanium’s poor heat conductivity as a reason for the change.
The sources also link the material experimentation to Apple’s first foldable iPhone, expected this year. They claim Apple may use a revised titanium material for the foldable’s frame to improve strength and reduce weight while keeping a similar surface area. In addition, they report that liquid metal is being considered for the foldable, with an emphasis on manufacturing and performance goals such as better display flatness and reduced crease visibility. The reports add that scaling mass production of liquid metal is said to be difficult, which could affect timelines for future iPhone Pro adoption.
