India’s maritime rescue agency loses contact with a Panama-flagged cargo vessel that sinks off the eastern coast of India, prompting a search-and-rescue operation, the Indian Coast Guard says. Commandant Amit Uniyal, a Coast Guard spokesman, says the ship has 24 crew members aboard, including 20 Chinese nationals, three Myanmar nationals and one Bangladeshi.

The Coast Guard dispatches two ships for the rescue mission from Sri Vijaya Puram (formerly Port Blair). Dawn reports that two people are rescued from life rafts, while the search continues for the remaining seafarers. Dawn also identifies the vessel as the Ocean Winner and says it was carrying iron ore to Singapore after leaving Paradip port in India on Thursday. It sank around 240 nautical miles from Paradip; both outlets say the cause of the sinking is unknown, with the Coast Guard investigating.
