Minnesota prosecutors announce charges against an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in connection with the shooting of a Venezuelan man in Minneapolis in January. Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty says Christian Castro, 53, is charged with multiple counts including four counts of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and a misdemeanor count of falsely reporting a crime. The charges relate to the 14 January shooting of Julio César Sosa-Celis, also described by some reports as a Venezuelan immigrant. Prosecutors state Castro’s alleged conduct occurred during the period of US President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement crackdown in the city. The Guardian reports that prosecutors add an additional count of falsely reporting a crime, and that an arrest warrant is issued. Separately, Free Malaysia Today reports that Castro is the second ICE agent charged in connection with incidents during the same enforcement surge in Minneapolis. The cases are at the charging stage and do not indicate convictions. Legal proceedings are set to follow after the issuance of a warrant for Castro’s arrest.
