Lagos pensioners set August 31 ultimatum for unpaid pension increases

Tension is rising between the Lagos State Government and retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) after pensioners set an August 31 deadline for the payment of their outstanding pension enhancement and wage award.The retirees, organised under the Nigeria Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme (NUPCPS), warned that failure to meet the demand could lead to what they called the “mother of all protests.”Michael Omisande, chairman of the NUPCPS Lagos State Council, announced the stance following a meeting with Permanent Secretary of the Public Service Office, Sunkanmi Oyegbola. He noted that the union had submitted a template to the state government in January 2026 proposing how the pension enhancement should be implemented.According to Omisande, the Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC) later informed the union that approval had been granted to engage an actuary to handle the process, yet the expected payments have still not been made.“We have communicated a 19-day ultimatum to Mr Governor to credit the accounts of pensioners on the pension increases/wage award, or face protest action tentatively fixed for August 31, 2026,” he said.Omisande added that the union had already notified Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa and the state Commissioner of Police about the planned demonstration to ensure security for the pensioners.Also present at the meeting were LASPEC Director-General Babalola Obilana and the commission’s Executive Director of Finance, Muyiwa Oshin. Obilana reportedly told the pensioners that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had summoned him and given a directive on the matter, though no specific payment date was provided.Leaders of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners Defined Benefit Scheme (NUPDBS), Olufemi Olarewaju and Olukayode Bada, also attended. Lagos State NLC chairman Funmi Sessi urged LASPEC to speed up the process to prevent the dispute from escalating.Omisande said the national leadership of the NUPCPS had endorsed the Lagos council’s position. The union plans to mobilise retirees through traditional and social media ahead of the proposed protest.“It is a sacrifice we must render for our financial emancipation. I strongly believe that the money can be paid if the government really wants to pay within the time frame,” he stated.Sessi similarly appealed to the state government to resolve the issue promptly and avert confrontation with the retirees.
