The Centre launches the “Kanda Express” initiative to increase onion supplies after onion prices rise sharply. According to reports, the programme focuses on moving bulk onion stock from Nashik, a key producing region, to major consumption centres. The onions are then made available through retail sales under government oversight.
The government also relies on buffer stock measures as part of its response. NDTV reports the Centre is considering releasing onions from its buffer stock into the market. Times of India says the government maintains a buffer stock and closely monitors prices, and adds that the moved onions are sold at Rs 35 per kg in retail markets. Across outlets, the main differences are the scale and timing of price changes highlighted and the emphasis on logistics versus buffer-stock releases, but both frame the move as a supply-side effort to bring down retail prices.
