The Income Tax Department asks taxpayers with business or professional income who are not required to undergo a tax audit to file their Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for Assessment Year 2026-27 by August 31. The department notes that 31 August 2026 is the due date for this non-audit category.
According to reporting, by August 20 more than 2 crore ITR-3 and ITR-4 forms have been filed on the e-filing portal, bringing total ITR filings for AY 2026-27 to over 6.5 crore. This includes more than 5.9 crore ITR-1 and ITR-2 returns filed by the July 31 deadline. Both outlets cite the department’s posts on X encouraging timely filing.
On the forms, the outlets align on which ITR types apply in the non-audit category: ITR-3 for individuals and Hindu Undivided Families with proprietary business or professional income; ITR-4 as a simpler option for small and medium taxpayers; ITR-5 for firms, LLPs and cooperative societies; and ITR-7 for trusts and charitable institutions. One outlet additionally lists ITR-6 for companies registered under the Companies Act, though it is not emphasized as part of the deadline reminder.
