France’s government says it will implement a ban on mobile phones in high schools (lycées) from the start of the new school year. The decision follows parliamentary approval of a broader measure in July that also covered limits on social media access for children under 15.
Outlets report that France’s highest constitutional body struck down the social media provision earlier this month, which is seen as a setback for President Emmanuel Macron, who had backed that part of the law. However, the Constitutional Council does not rule on the separate mobile-phone ban for high schools. Government spokesperson Maud Bregeon says Macron proceeds with promulgating the law that includes the phone restriction, arguing the ban now has a stable legal basis. This policy comes after France already bans mobile phone use for students in colleges (middle schools).
