The United States urges the UN Security Council to broaden an existing UN arms embargo on Sudan’s Darfur region to cover all of Sudan. The US says the ongoing conflict risks spreading beyond Darfur and that extending restrictions would help address the violence.
The Darfur embargo has been in place for more than two decades and is set to expire on September 12, 2026, unless the Security Council agrees on a new arrangement. The proposal would require a Security Council vote. Russia, which holds veto power, warns against new measures, saying they could harm the Sudanese army. Denmark supports the US position, with Denmark backing the push as it holds the council’s rotating presidency.
