The Federal Government has started demolishing Carter Bridge in Lagos to clear the way for a new replacement. Multiple outlets report the project is valued at ₦548.98 billion and involves rebuilding rather than repairing the existing structure, which links Lagos Island with the mainland.
Officials say earlier technical assessments in 2013, 2019 and under the current administration determine the bridge is beyond repair, with particular concerns about deterioration of underwater piles and pile caps. While the current bridge length is reported as about 1.525km, the replacement is described as longer, at about 1.93km, and includes a flyover ramp intended to ease a traffic bottleneck between the island and the mainland. The new design also reportedly provides two navigational waterways, each 105 metres wide.
Outlets also differ slightly in emphasis. Nigerian Eye highlights the bridge’s marine exposure, details on assessments and traffic management plans during demolition, and the contract award process. The Punch and Legit.ng focus more broadly on the commencement of demolition and the announced replacement cost, without adding extensive design or procurement details.
