South Korea’s Oscar selection committee has chosen Lee Chang-dong’s upcoming film “Possible Love” as the country’s official submission for the Academy Awards’ Best International Feature Film category. KOFIC’s release highlights praise for “cinematic completeness,” the clarity of Lee’s message, and the film’s mise-en-scene, along with depictions of multidimensional characters and complex relationships. Multiple outlets note that this is Lee Chang-dong’s first feature in about eight years since 2018’s “Burning.” “Possible Love” is set to premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival.
Other coverage also points to campaign plans tied to Netflix. Hollywood Reporter and Deadline say Netflix, which financed the film and holds international rights, plans to seek Oscar attention, including an Oscar-qualifying theatrical release in South Korea, the U.S., and select territories after Venice. Variety and others frame the selection as an entry for the 2027 international feature race.
