Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso Mamdani says he does not support the rally associated with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat’s scheduled address at Madison Square Garden in New York. Mamdani comments come when asked whether the event should be cancelled.
Mamdani tells reporters he does not back the event, but he also says he is unsure whether the city has jurisdiction to cancel a private gathering. He makes the remarks at a news conference in response to questions about the venue and whether authorities can intervene.
Times of India and Mint both report that Bhagwat is scheduled to speak at the venue on August 29, with an estimated attendance of around 5,000 members of the Indian diaspora. The visits is described as part of the RSS’s centenary-year global outreach programme. The outlets focus on Mamdani’s stance and his view of the limits of city power regarding a private event.
