Microsoft has announced an Xbox disc-to-digital program that lets players claim a digital entitlement for certain physical game discs. The program works by inserting a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launching the game, after which the player gets digital access without needing to keep the disc in the console.

Microsoft says the physical disc “continues to work exactly as it always has,” but multiple reports note the digital entitlement is revocable and tied to the specific disc. If the disc is resold or loaned, the entitlement can transfer when a new account inserts the disc on a supported console, meaning the original account may lose access. Features associated with digital play—including Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming where supported—are part of the promised benefits.

Outlets also place the announcement in broader context. Several link the move to Sony’s decision to end manufacturing PlayStation discs for games released after January 2028. GameSpot further connects the initiative to uncertainty around Microsoft’s next console, Project Helix, while Microsoft’s CEO emphasizes giving players choice and does not confirm whether Project Helix will include a disc drive.

Testing begins with Xbox Insiders on August 31, with wider availability later. Microsoft says thousands of titles will eventually support the program, though not every game is available at launch.
