Panic is refunding Playdate customers the tariff charges the company added during the period when US import duties were in effect. After the Supreme Court rules the tariffs illegal, Panic begins receiving refunds from the government and says it is passing that money back to buyers. Refund communication goes out via email, and Panic says payments should be processed automatically.
The company says it previously could not absorb the cost because Playdate hardware operates on low margins. Instead, Panic presented the surcharge as a clearly labeled line item during checkout while the tariffs applied, including a stated refund amount for the tariff portion. Panic also maintains an online explanation page describing why the fee was added. In contrast, some larger console makers and related firms did not highlight direct refunds to customers, and some faced legal disputes over whether tariff-related price changes were justified.
Across reports, Panic’s central position is that “it wasn’t our money to keep,” and that returning the funds is the right approach despite the administrative work required to claim the refunds and build a system to reimburse customers.
