Astronaut Jonny Kim is leaving NASA to continue serving in the U.S. military. NASA says his last day at the agency is Thursday, after nearly a decade of work that includes an eight-month research mission on the International Space Station (ISS). He launched to the ISS in April 2025 aboard the Soyuz MS‑27 spacecraft and carries out science activities during his time in orbit.
Both outlets report that Kim plans to return to active duty as a military officer. NASA specifies that he will continue service as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy. Space.com adds that Kim is also a medical doctor, and that he completes one spaceflight during his NASA career, before departing the agency to resume his military path.
