Japan’s organising committee tells late-added participants for next month’s Asian Games to “find your own room,” saying it lacks the manpower and budget to make arrangements for increased numbers. Committee president Hideaki Omura says there is “neither the manpower nor the budget” to handle the additional logistics.
The Games are held in Nagoya and the wider Aichi area from Sept 19 to Oct 4. Organisers initially expected about 15,000 athletes and officials, but the total is reported to have risen to around 17,000. Outlets also note that Japan does not have a dedicated athletes’ village, instead using a mix of accommodations including a cruise ship, temporary wooden containers and hotels.
While the reporting centers on Japan’s refusal to centrally house extra participants, the outlets largely describe the same underlying issue: increased participation strains existing arrangements built for the earlier headcount, leaving organisers unable to expand their capacity at the required speed.
