Six South Africans are reported missing after flash floods and mudslides hit an area on the Nepal–China (Tibet) border. Families say they have been unable to contact them since Wednesday, following the disaster, and South African officials are working with local authorities as the search continues.
The reports consistently identify the missing as four residents of Ladysmith and one woman from East London, with additional reporting naming a 33-year-old woman from Isipingo Beach. South Africa’s High Commissioner to India, Anil Sooklal, says officials are in daily contact with Nepalese authorities and families. One outlet also reports that DNA profiles from biological relatives have been sent to Nepalese police and Interpol to help identification.
Outlets also differ slightly in emphasis. Some focus on the families’ lack of information and their ongoing calls for help, including a note that Gift of the Givers says it is ready to deploy but has not received a formal request. Others highlight the government’s coordination efforts and the steps taken to confirm identities.
