Gap Inc. announces Michael Francis as the next president and CEO of Old Navy, in a leadership change intended to support the brand’s turnaround. The company says Francis will start the role on November 2. He succeeds current Old Navy CEO Haio Barbeito, who transitions to an advisory position.

Francis joined Old Navy in March as chief customer officer and head of marketing shared services. Before that, he spent 26 years at Target, helping develop the retailer’s “cheap chic” positioning, and later worked at Walmart on marketing operations. Gap executives describe his brand-building and customer-focused experience as key to strengthening Old Navy’s relevance and accelerating growth.

The move follows Gap’s second-quarter results, in which Old Navy reports net sales down 4% year-over-year to $2.1 billion, with pressure concentrated in women’s seasonal categories and slower store traffic. Gap attributes some of the shortfall to missteps in assortment and marketing execution. While Old Navy faces a weaker outlook, Gap reports overall results supported by performance at its other brands and upgrades to full-year earnings guidance, prompting a stock jump in premarket trading. Reporting also notes analysts view the leadership transition as a potential catalyst for second-half improvement.
