Meta says it will start charging businesses for certain customer-service and utility messages on WhatsApp Business from October 1, 2026. The change applies to messages sent through the WhatsApp Business Platform (formerly the WhatsApp Business API), according to notices shared on the platform.
Meta’s update restores per-message charging for service messages (non-template replies businesses send after a customer starts a chat) that have been free since November 1, 2024. It also introduces per-message charges for utility messages sent in response to users within an open 24-hour customer service window—messages that have been free since July 1, 2025. The 24-hour window remains, but businesses will not be able to send free service messages once that window closes under the new policy.
Both outlets note Meta has not published specific new rates in the materials provided. Nigerian Eye points to existing reference pricing, estimating utility-type messages to Nigerian numbers at about $0.0101 per message, while also stating businesses are expected to confirm the final October rate card. Meta also warns that businesses or solution providers must have a valid payment method on file by September 30, 2026 to avoid message delivery being stopped.
