Police in Rivers State detain a police officer following a shooting that kills 22-year-old Anthony Obodo, a recent University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) graduate, in Port Harcourt. The Rivers State Police Command says the officer and other personnel involved were detained after the incident and that preliminary findings are being reviewed.

Multiple outlets report the shooting happened around 5 p.m. on Thursday, 27 August 2026, at the Agip-Ada George Junction. Eyewitness accounts say officers flagged down Obodo’s vehicle, pursued it after he allegedly did not stop, and shots were fired. Reports state the driver was hit and later died at a nearby hospital, while the vehicle crashed and injured bystanders.

Outlets also describe a public reaction at the scene, with residents assaulting the officer involved before other police personnel intervene. The police statement carried across reports says an altercation between Obodo and the officer led to the gunshot. The command says Corporal Alfred Louis and his team are transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for investigation and possible disciplinary action.
