The GST Council is scheduled to meet on September 12, chaired by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, with officials meeting on September 11 beforehand. The Council is expected to consider ways to simplify GST registration for large businesses, particularly those passing on input tax credit above Rs 2.5 lakh per month. It is also expected to discuss changes related to automation and the process for GST registration cancellations.

Both reports say the meeting follows a gap of more than a year since the last Council meeting, which took place on September 3–4, 2025. That earlier meeting approved a major restructuring of GST rates and slabs. The new structure, effective from September 22, 2025, includes standard rates of 5% and 18%, plus a 40% rate for specified sin and ultra-luxury goods, replacing the prior four-tier system of 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%.

The differing emphasis across outlets is mainly on what the reforms would target in practice: one report highlights the lack of uniformity between central and state registration procedures for large taxpayers, while the other focuses on easing registration and automating cancellations. Both also reference the simplified GST registration scheme for small, low-risk businesses that began on November 1, 2025.
