China reports that at least 16 people die and hundreds remain missing after a mudslide in Tibet, according to state media. China’s broadcaster CCTV says 546 people are missing following the disaster.
State media and officials’ figures also indicate that a large portion of the missing are foreign nationals. CCTV reports that among the 546 missing, 261 are foreigners, including 104 from Nepal, 49 from India, 33 from Latvia, and 18 from the United States. The Jerusalem Post reports similar numbers, citing that the highest number of missing foreigners is from Nepal at 104 and listing additional nationalities including Indian, Latvian, American, and British citizens among those unaccounted for.
While the outlets broadly agree on the overall death toll and the total missing, they differ slightly in the specific breakdown of missing foreign nationals beyond the commonly reported countries. Both accounts, however, present the same core picture: a deadly mudslide in Tibet, with a significant number of missing people, including foreign travellers.
