Hundreds of members of Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) defect to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano State, a move described by outlets as a setback for the APC. The defections take place in Takai Local Government Area, where the NDC senatorial candidate for Kano South, Dr Kassim Ibrahim Bataiya, receives the new members.
The reports link the defections to a broader pattern of political realignments in Kano ahead of the 2027 general election. One outlet says defections from the ruling party to the NDC have continued since Rabiu Kwankwaso emerges as the NDC’s vice-presidential candidate. Another notes that, alongside NDC gains, some politicians also leave Kwankwaso’s camp for the APC as campaigning increases in the state. Political observers cited across the accounts expect a closely contested race in Kano in 2027, with Kwankwaso and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, described as estranged political allies, likely to compete for influence.
