An Igbo political campaign group in Nigeria says it is planning to meet prominent Igbo leaders to urge former Anambra State governor Peter Obi to step down from the 2027 presidential race and instead support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election. Reports say the initiative comes from the Southeast chapter of the Renewed Hope for Greater Nigeria (RHGN), with plans to engage organisations and statesmen including Ohanaeze and former diplomat Alex Anyaoku.
However, another Igbo group rejects the RHGN approach. The Igbo Heroes and Icons Foundation (IHIF) tells campaigners not to pursue persuasion aimed at Obi, according to one outlet. In this framing, the dispute is not over the idea of political engagement in the Southeast, but over who should be asked to withdraw and on what basis.
Across the reports, the shared point is that multiple Igbo groups are actively discussing the 2027 presidential contest involving Obi and Tinubu. The differing angles are who is initiating the proposed outreach (RHGN) and which other group is opposing it (IHIF).
