Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, questions the benefits of Nigeria’s fuel subsidy removal under President Bola Tinubu, saying the public has not yet seen tangible improvements. Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Falana argues that citizens should not simply be told to “wait” for promised gains, adding that “people are dying.”
Falana calls on Nigerians to demand transparency from federal, state and local governments about how additional revenues attributed to subsidy removal are used. He urges scrutiny of whether the funds are directed to practical priorities such as infrastructure and cites earlier episodes in which state governments repaired roads and later sought reimbursement from the federal government. He also warns against a return to what he describes as the “era of the fuel subsidy scam,” saying Nigerians deserve clear evidence that the policy is improving lives.
