The European Commission places ChatGPT under strict EU digital safety rules, classifying it as a “search engine” for the purposes of the Digital Services Act (DSA). Brussels also designates Reddit and Roblox as “Very Large Online Platforms,” subjecting them to the most stringent oversight and compliance requirements. The companies are given four months to meet the new obligations.

The decision reflects how EU regulators are extending DSA duties across different types of online services, including an AI chatbot when it is treated as providing search-like functionality. Both outlets report that the designations trigger additional transparency and risk-management duties tied to the DSA framework.

While one outlet highlights ChatGPT as the first AI chatbot to receive this “search engine” classification, the other focuses on the broader package of rules affecting all three services through two separate DSA categories: search engines for ChatGPT and Very Large Online Platforms for Reddit and Roblox. In all cases, the Commission sets a clear compliance deadline.
