Astronomers continue to search for an “Earth 2.0” — an Earth-mass, rocky planet in the habitable zone around a Sun-like star — but such planets have not yet been found. One reason is that many nearby Sun-like stars are part of multi-star systems, where one or more companion stars complicate the gravitational environment and the orbital dynamics of potential planets.
A new study shared as a preprint on arXiv proposes using these complex dynamics as a feature rather than a drawback. The research describes a possible NASA Small Explorer mission, Searching for Habitable Exoplanets with Relative Astrometry (SHERA). The concept is to apply relative astrometry to help detect and characterize Earth-sized worlds that orbit within binary (or multiple-star) systems, taking advantage of how the stellar companions influence observable motions.
