Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday lauds India’s 7.8% real GDP growth in the first quarter of FY27, citing it as evidence of the country’s “collective strength” and crediting people’s work amid difficult global conditions. In a video message posted on X, he says the figure comes despite wars, crises and disrupted supply chains, and he calls for maintaining economic momentum.

In the same message, Modi criticises the Opposition for what he describes as spreading despair and echoing falsehoods. He also urges citizens to follow a Swadeshi approach, saying that unnecessary foreign travel for sightseeing and weddings abroad should be avoided. He adds that gold should not be bought if it is not necessary.

The GDP growth number is based on data released by India’s Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) for April–June (Q1 FY27). MoSPI estimates real GDP at 7.8%, compared with 6.9% in Q1 FY26, and reports real GDP at Rs 81.36 lakh crore. Other released indicators include 10.3% nominal GDP growth and 8.2% growth in real gross value added (GVA). Outlets also note that the RBI had earlier projected 7% for Q1 FY27 and later revised its full-year FY27 real GDP forecast to 6.7%.
