India’s power consumption rises nearly 13% year-on-year in August, reaching 169.01 billion units (BU), according to official data cited by multiple outlets. The growth rate is reported as 12.85% compared with the same month a year earlier, when consumption is stated as 149.76 BU.
Outlets attribute the increase to unusually humid conditions that raise “feel-like” temperatures above actual readings. Experts say this drives greater use of cooling appliances such as air conditioners, lifting electricity demand and consumption across parts of the country. The Economic Times also reports that peak power demand increases to 258.27 GW in August, up from 229.72 GW in August 2025, though it remains below the May record high of 270.82 GW. It further notes that peak demand in August stays under the government’s estimated ceiling of 277 GW and links expectations for September to continued monsoon humidity and forecast rainfall that is projected to be deficient and lower than normal.
