US President Donald Trump faces backlash after inviting Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov to attend upcoming G20 meetings, despite Russia’s long-running isolation from parts of the international community. Western officials have previously criticized Russia’s presence and the circumstances under which Russian representatives participate.

According to reports, Siluanov last attended the G20 in April 2022, when he joined via videolink. At that time, some Western officials walked out during the session, underscoring objections to Russia’s inclusion following its actions in Ukraine. The current invitation therefore triggers renewed scrutiny of whether Russia’s participation is appropriate for the forum and how other countries should respond.
