Mexico’s Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) restores electricity after a major blackout affecting parts of the Yucatán Peninsula, including Yucatán and Quintana Roo, with additional impacts reported in Chiapas and some areas of Campeche. The outage lasts about seven hours, according to one outlet, after beginning on 31 August.
CFE attributes the disruption to damage on two 400 kV transmission lines, which it characterizes as “vandalism.” Other reporting adds that the blackout also partially affects Belize. Local businesses in Mérida face the practical consequences of long-running power reliability issues, with some describing years of disruption linked to outages.
