The UN’s nuclear watchdog reports that Syria, under former President Bashar al-Assad, was building a nuclear reactor at Deir el-Zour and failed to declare related nuclear material, facilities and activities as required.
According to a confidential report referenced by multiple outlets, inspectors with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) visited several sites in Syria in August and carried out verification work. The IAEA states it is able to establish that the former Syrian authorities had not met their obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Safeguards Agreement.
