Nigeria’s Lassa fever cases reach 1,035 as deaths rise to 252

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has confirmed 14 new cases of Lassa fever, bringing the total number of infections in 2026 to 1,035.According to the agency’s Week 33 situation report released in Abuja on Tuesday, the new cases were recorded between August 10 and August 16 in Bauchi, Benue, Ondo, and Edo states.The cumulative death toll has risen to 252, with the case fatality rate climbing to 24.4 percent. This is higher than the 18.6 percent recorded during the corresponding period in 2025.The 14 cases mark an increase from the four confirmed infections reported in epidemiological Week 32, which were limited to Ondo and Edo states. At that time, total cases stood at 1,021, with 240 deaths and a fatality rate of 23.5 percent.NCDC noted that the Week 32 figure itself reflected a drop from the 17 cases recorded in Week 31, highlighting ongoing fluctuations in weekly transmission.By Week 33, 23 states had reported at least one confirmed case across 117 local government areas. The agency said Lassa fever remains a significant public health concern and reaffirmed its commitment to continued surveillance and response efforts in the affected states.
