Peru announces it is ending diplomatic relations with Iran, citing concerns linked to the escalation of tensions in the Middle East. The Peruvian foreign ministry says the decision reflects the country’s “historic commitment to peace” and aligns with principles of international law and democracy.
Peru also points to what it describes as democratic backsliding in Iran, including repression of peaceful demonstrations, restrictions on press freedom, discrimination against women and girls, and persecution of political opponents. The government says it is responding to what it calls Iran’s “incitement to violence” and its alleged obstruction of the work of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Both outlets note Peru warns that the move could have repercussions for energy prices and global supply chains, particularly amid trade disruptions through the strategic Strait of Hormuz. While diplomatic ties end, Peru indicates consular relations will continue to protect the interests and nationals of both countries.
