Prominent Social Democratic Party (SDP) leaders in Oyo State are leaving the party and joining the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 elections. Reportedly, among those who defect are Mogaji Saheed Oyewale and David Arowolo, both associated with the SDP’s candidacies in Oluyole State Constituency (2023) and local government elections (2024).
Multiple outlets say the defectors also include other SDP officials such as Ganiyu Lawal (Chairman for Oluyole Local Government Area), Adetunji Adewale (Secretary), Taiwo Lasisi (Women Leader), Muritala Jeje (Youth Leader), and Afeez Agbongbon (Public Relations Officer). Nigerian Eye adds that the entire local government and ward executive committees from all 10 electoral wards in the area move with them and that the group announces the decision during a visit to the APC state secretariat in Ibadan.
The coverage differs mainly in detail. Daily Post Nigeria emphasizes that the SDP leaders “dump” the party to join the APC, while Nigerian Eye provides a fuller list of officials and quotes Oyewale saying the move is aimed at supporting President Bola Tinubu’s vision. Both accounts frame the defection as a step taken in preparation for the 2027 electoral contest.
